NOX / game design and writing / 2023
I worked with artist Lawrence Lek on a game to run as part of his exhibition NOX, on show at LAS in Berlin until January 2024. This followed an earlier collaboration on a game which ran as part of his exhibition Black Cloud Highway 黑云高速公路 at Sadie Coles HQ in London.
In both exhibitions, the game explores part of the larger world Lek has built. The exhibitions themselves envisage a future world in which AI is fully integrated into the running of its cities. The role of self-driving cars within that world acts an access point onto the wider fiction.
For Black Cloud Highway 黑云高速公路, Lek and the games team built a short interactive narrative that follows a single self-driving car on its journey through, and parhaps out of, a decaying future city. For NOX, which stands for “non-human excellence”, we created a training simulation to represent a cheerfully dystopian company’s-eye-view of a human employee working to heal damaged self-driving cars, both emotionally and physically.
